What is image cropping?
Crop Image lets you trim the edges of a photo or select a specific region to keep. Use it to remove unwanted backgrounds, tighten composition, or prepare images for profile pictures, thumbnails, and banners.
The crop area is fully interactive — drag and resize the selection handles directly on the image preview. You can also type exact pixel coordinates or choose a preset aspect ratio like 1:1, 16:9, or 4:3. The tool runs client-side; see our processing model for details.
Cropping is one of the most frequent image editing tasks. Photographers crop to improve composition by removing distracting elements at the edges. Social media managers crop photos to fit platform-specific aspect ratios — 1:1 squares for Instagram feed posts, 9:16 for Stories, 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails, and 2.35:1 for cinematic website banners. Designers crop screenshots and mockups to isolate specific UI elements for documentation. E-commerce sellers crop product photos to center the item and remove background clutter before uploading to marketplaces.
Because cropping removes pixels rather than scaling them, the output quality is identical to the original within the selected region. This makes cropping a lossless operation in terms of image detail — no interpolation or resampling is involved. If you need the cropped result at specific pixel dimensions (for example, exactly 800x800 for an avatar), crop first to get the right composition, then use Resize Image to scale to your target size. For more format-specific tips, see our image format comparison guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
Yes. Enter the exact pixel width, height, X offset, and Y offset in the coordinate fields for precise control over the crop area.
Can I crop to a specific aspect ratio?
Yes. Choose from preset ratios like 1:1 (square), 16:9 (widescreen), 4:3, or 3:2, and the crop selection will be constrained to that ratio automatically.
Does cropping affect image quality?
No. The pixels within the selected crop area are preserved at full original quality. Only the pixels outside the crop boundary are discarded. If you need to scale the result to specific dimensions afterward, use Resize Image for proportional scaling.
How do I crop an image to a circle?
This tool crops to rectangular regions. To create a circular crop effect, crop your image to a 1:1 square first, then apply a circular mask using CSS (border-radius: 50%) when displaying the image on your website. Most social media platforms automatically apply a circular mask to square profile pictures.
Can I crop an image to remove the background?
Cropping removes rectangular border regions around the edges of an image. If the unwanted background is only on the edges, cropping works well. For removing complex backgrounds around an irregular subject (like a person or product), you need a dedicated background removal tool that uses AI segmentation rather than simple rectangular cropping.
