What is HEIC to JPG conversion?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11, defined by ISO/IEC 23008-12 (HEIF) and using the HEVC (H.265) video codec for the actual pixel data.
HEIC files are typically 40-50% smaller than equivalent JPG at matching visual quality, which is why Apple adopted it. The trade-off is ecosystem lock-in: HEVC is patent-encumbered, so Windows requires a paid Microsoft Store HEVC Video Extension, many Android gallery apps cannot decode HEIC at all, and most web upload forms reject the .heic extension outright. The compatibility gap is the primary driver for this conversion. E-commerce product upload systems, government and banking document portals, CMS image fields, and most email clients expect JPG or PNG. Social platforms accept HEIC uploads by re-encoding server-side, but the results are inconsistent and you lose control over compression quality. Converting to JPG before sharing guarantees predictable output across every device. EXIF metadata is preserved during conversion: GPS coordinates, capture date, camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed), and the orientation flag are copied to the JPG. What cannot survive is everything stored as auxiliary tracks inside the HEIC container — Live Photo motion video, Portrait-mode depth maps, and Apple's ProRAW DNG sidecars are dropped. If you switched your iPhone to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible, capture goes directly to JPG and storage roughly doubles; HEIC capture plus on-demand JPG conversion is usually the better balance. For lossless export use HEIC to PNG; for web delivery use HEIC to WebP.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
- JPG opens on every device, app, printer, and website without any special software
- Share iPhone photos with Windows users and Android devices without compatibility issues
- Upload photos to social media, e-commerce, and CMS platforms that reject HEIC
- Email and messaging apps handle JPG reliably without conversion failures
What is the difference between HEIC and JPG?
The table below compares HEIC vs JPG across key format characteristics.
| Feature | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| File extension | .heic | .jpg |
| Compression type | Lossy | Lossy |
| Transparency support | Yes (alpha) | No |
| Animation support | Yes | No |
| File size | Smaller | Moderate |
| Best use case | iPhone photography | Photographs |
| Browser support | Apple ecosystem | Universal |
Use HEIC on Apple devices for storage efficiency; convert to JPG for universal sharing.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone take HEIC photos instead of JPG?
Apple switched to HEIC by default in iOS 11 because it produces photos that are roughly half the size of equivalent JPG files at the same quality. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats, but converting after the fact is often more practical.
Is quality lost when converting HEIC to JPG?
Minimal quality loss at high settings. This tool converts at 90% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. The original HEIC file itself may already have some lossy compression.
Is my photo orientation preserved after conversion?
Yes. This converter reads the EXIF orientation data from the HEIC file and embeds it in the JPG, so your photo will display correctly in any app.
Will converting HEIC to JPG preserve my iPhone photo metadata like location and date?
Yes. This converter reads and transfers EXIF metadata including GPS location, date taken, camera settings, and orientation from the HEIC file into the JPG output. Your photo library apps will still display the correct date and location.
Can I set my iPhone to take JPG photos instead of HEIC?
Yes. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible. This switches to JPG capture. However, your photos will use roughly twice the storage. A more practical approach is to keep HEIC for storage efficiency and convert individual photos to JPG only when needed for sharing.
How do I convert multiple HEIC photos from my iPhone at once?
Transfer all your HEIC files to your computer (via AirDrop, USB, or cloud storage), then drag and drop them all into this tool. Each file is converted individually to JPG. For very large batches (hundreds of photos), Apple Photos can also export as JPG in its File > Export menu.
Will Live Photos or Portrait mode depth data survive the conversion?
No. Live Photo video data and Portrait mode depth maps are stored as separate data within the HEIC container and cannot be represented in JPG format. The static photo itself converts perfectly, but the interactive features are lost. This is true for any conversion out of HEIC.
I shot in Apple ProRAW. Should I use HEIC to JPG or export from Photos directly?
ProRAW captures save as DNG, not HEIC, so this tool does not apply. For ProRAW DNG, use Apple Photos or Lightroom to develop the file and export as JPG with full control over white balance, exposure, and tonal adjustments. HEIC-to-JPG is for the standard, already-developed HEIC files iPhone produces by default.
