What is HEIC to JPG conversion?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default, and converting it to JPG makes those photos open on Windows PCs, Android phones, and almost any website or app. Apple has captured to HEIC since iOS 11.
Technically it is a High Efficiency Image Container defined by ISO/IEC 23008-12 (HEIF), holding pixels compressed with the HEVC (H.265) video codec, and it earns its place by producing files roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG. Its weakness is licensing: HEVC is patent-encumbered, so Windows wants a paid HEVC Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, many Android gallery apps decode nothing at all, and most web upload forms reject the .heic extension on sight. Compatibility, then, is the whole point of converting. E-commerce product upload systems, government and banking document portals, CMS image fields, and most email clients expect JPG (the ITU-T T.81 JPEG standard) or PNG. Social platforms do accept HEIC by re-encoding server-side, but the results are inconsistent and you surrender control over compression quality. Converting first makes the output predictable on every device. Metadata does not survive the trip. The converter decodes only the pixel data from the HEIC container, so GPS coordinates, capture date, and camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) are not copied into the JPG. That cuts both ways: the output is safe to share without revealing where it was taken, but photo apps will sort it by file date rather than capture date. Anything stored as an auxiliary track inside the container, such as Live Photo motion video and Portrait-mode depth maps, is dropped as well. Switching the phone to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible captures JPG directly but roughly doubles storage use; shooting HEIC and converting on demand is usually the better balance. For lossless export use HEIC to PNG; for web delivery use HEIC to WebP.

Why does my iPhone take HEIC photos instead of JPG?
Apple switched to HEIC by default in iOS 11 because it produces photos that are roughly half the size of equivalent JPG files at the same quality. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats, but converting after the fact is often more practical.
Is quality lost when converting HEIC to JPG?
Minimal quality loss at high settings. This tool converts at 90% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. The original HEIC file itself may already have some lossy compression.
Will converting HEIC to JPG preserve my iPhone photo metadata like location and date?
No. The converter decodes only the image pixels, so GPS location, date taken, and camera settings are not carried into the JPG. That makes the output safe to share publicly, but photo library apps will not know when or where it was taken. If you need to keep that information, export the photo from Apple Photos as JPG instead, or copy the metadata across afterwards with a desktop tool such as exiftool.
Can I set my iPhone to take JPG photos instead of HEIC?
Yes. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible. This switches to JPG capture. However, your photos will use roughly twice the storage. A more practical approach is to keep HEIC for storage efficiency and convert individual photos to JPG only when needed for sharing.
How do I convert multiple HEIC photos from my iPhone at once?

Will Live Photos or Portrait mode depth data survive the conversion?
No. Live Photo video data and Portrait mode depth maps are stored as separate data within the HEIC container and cannot be represented in JPG format. The static photo itself converts perfectly, but the interactive features are lost. This is true for any conversion out of HEIC.
I shot in Apple ProRAW. Should I use HEIC to JPG or export from Photos directly?
ProRAW captures save as DNG, not HEIC, so this tool does not apply. For ProRAW DNG, use Apple Photos or Lightroom to develop the file and export as JPG with full control over white balance, exposure, and tonal adjustments. HEIC-to-JPG is for the standard, already-developed HEIC files iPhone produces by default.
